Pilate Gives Up, Luke 23:18-25

This post concerns Pilate giving up to the demands of the Jews.

Pilate Gives Up discusses what happened when the Jews demanded crucifixion of Jesus, Luke 23:18. “But they all cried out together, “Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas”— a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and for murder.”

The Romans had a custom of releasing one prisoner at Passover as an effort to appease the Jews. Barabbas was a wicked murderer and insurrectionist. The crowd asked for release of Barabbas instead of Jesus who they thought Pilate was about to release.

Pilate tried again to release Jesus. But they continued to cry out, crucify him. Pilot tried once more to release Jesus, Luke 23:22. “A third time he said to them, “Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no guilt deserving death. I will therefore punish and release him.”

Pilate explained that he could find no real reason to kill Jesus. So, he would beat Him and let him go. Clearly, Pilate desired to release this innocent man brought before him by the Jews, Luke 23:23. “But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified.”

An enigma attached to Pilate was that he had the Roman legions behind him. Yet, he gave up to the Jews. The Romans were familiar with the Jews and could put them down whenever they wished to. Unfortunately, Pilate did not have the backbone to ignore their pleas, Luke 23:23-25. “And their voices prevailed. So, Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus over to their will.”

Pilate knew the truth but let Satan and the Jews cause him to send innocent Jesus to His death.

The lesson for us: Knowing the truth does not keep us from obeying Satan.

So, what did we learn?

1.A moral coward delivers Jesus to be crucified.

2.We can know the truth and still opt to follow Satan.
