Judas’ Problem, Luke 22:47-48

This post concerns Judas’ mental problem that brought on his betrayal of Jesus.

Judas’s Problem discusses why Judas betrayed Jesus, Luke 22:47-48. “He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”

Judas illustrates a flawed mental character, John 12:4-6. “But Judas Iscario…, said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii ?… but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it”

Judas loved money so much he stole to get it. So, he decided to betray Jesus for money, Matthew 26:14-16. “… Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests… “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” …they paid him thirty pieces of silver…from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.”

Psalms 41:9 predicted this. “Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.”

Judas allowed worldly desires to overtake him. Thus, he betrayed the Savior of the world.

Today, we also can let our worldly desires overtake us. The desire for money can cause us to forsake the assembly, Hebrew 10:24-25, “… let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as…the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

In addition, the Hebrew writer warns that if we turn our backs on Christianity, nothing remains to save us, Hebrews 10:26. “For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins”

This happened to Judas. He listened for about three years to Jesus. Then, he let his desire for money overwhelm him so that he betrayed Jesus. The preaching and presence of Jesus did not have a beneficial effect on his mind. He still desired money more than obedience to Jesus.

Significantly, regular attendance at worship can help us stay faithful.

So, what did we learn?

1.Judas betrayed Jesus.

2.Judas was a thief.

3.Obeying Jesus requires mental effort.
