The Sanhedrin, Luke 22:63-71

This post concerns Jesus’ treatment by the Jews, the soldiers, and before the Sanhedrin council.

The Sanhedrin discusses Jesus’ trial before the Jewish highest court. First, the soldiers mocked and beat Him, Luke 22:63-65. “Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, “Prophesy! Who is it that struck you? “And they said many other things against him, blaspheming him.”

When the Sanhedrin council assembled, Jesus appeared before them, Luke 22:66-69. “When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their council, and they said, “If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, and if I ask you, you will not answer. But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”

Jesus answered to the only charge that really mattered—was He the Messiah? They then made the question plain, Luke 22:70. “So they all said, “Are you the Son of God, then?”

Their next question shows they understood what He meant. Jesus answered clearly because they also understood what Jesus claimed, Luke 22:70-71, “And he said to them, “You say that I am.” Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”

This claim they would not accept even though they thought of themselves as highly trained and religious.

This teaches us that groups or bodies of men who claim they are religiously correct do not necessarily have the truth.

So, what did we learn?

1.The soldiers mocked Jesus.

2.Jesus was interrogated by the Sanhedrin council and condemned.

3.Jesus claimed His status as the Messiah, the Son of God.
