Adding to Faith, 2 Peter 1:3-11
This post concerns adding to our faith.
Adding to Faith discusses what Peter said about growing as a Christian, 2 Peter 1:3-7. “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption…in the world because of sinful desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.”
Early in this chapter, Peter says that God has given us everything needful for life and godliness. Then, we can possess a measure of His divine nature. This makes up the reason for adding to our faith these qualities.
Peter provides the incentive to add these seven qualities, 2 Peter 1:8-11. “… if these qualities are yours and… increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ… whoever lacks these qualities…so nearsighted that he… blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins…if you practice these qualities, you will never fall… in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
This makes us a wonderful promise. If we add these qualities, we will never fall.
So, what did we learn?
1.The basis of faith comprises belief in God, the Bible and Jesus as the Son of God.
2.We need to add virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love to our faith.
3.Add these seven qualities so as to never fall.
