False Prophets, Matthew 7:15-23

This post concerns knowing false prophets by checking their fruits.

False Prophets discusses camouflaged teachers of error, Matthew 7:15, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” These teachers of error comprise a particular danger since they come camouflaged into the church to wreck harm and division. Their fruits identify them, Matthew 7:16. “You will recognize them by their fruits.”

Jesus then provides analogies from life to stress the nature of these teachers of error, Matthew 7:16. “Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, you will recognize them by their fruits.”

The fruits of division in the church and not following the words of Jesus identify these teachers of error.

On Judgement Day the tragedy of following these teachers of error appears, Matthew 7:21-23. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father… in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.”

Thinking that the work they label as religious counts for a home in heaven and then finding that Jesus does not recognize them, amounts to a profound tragedy since it seals their fate throughout eternity. Those who go to heaven obey the will of God and not these teachers of error.

So, what did we learn?

1.False teachers come into the church camouflaged as true believers.

2.The fruits of false teachers identify them.
