Judging, Matthew 7:1-6

This post concerns a type of judging condemned by Jesus.

Judging discusses what Jesus meant, Matthew 7:1-2. “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment, you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.”

Jesus condemns hypocritical judging and describes what He meant, Matthew 7:3-5 “Why do you see the speck… in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log…in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there… log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”

This command by Jesus describes the person interested in the sins of others but ignoring his own sins. Jesus provides this command to the person ignoring his own sins, a hypocritical person. Jesus says, ‘First, clean up your own life. Then you can help others cleanse their sins.

In addition, Jesus warns about attacks from some people, Matthew 7:5. “Do not give dogs what… holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.” Some people will not receive instruction about their sins. Jesus says, do not spend time on such people.

Some sinners use Matthew 7:1 to repel anyone who tries to help them see their sins by saying, ‘the Bible says don’t judge.’ However, this judgement concerns hypocritical judging. Jesus judges sin, but not hypocritically, Matthew 5:27-28. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” This entails Jesus’ judging, but not hypocritically.

Likewise, Jesus severely criticized the scribes and Pharisees in Matthew 23, but again, not hypocritically.

So, what did we learn?

1.Jesus said do not judge. His example shows He meant hypocritical judging.

2.Clean up your own sins before criticizing others.

3.Jesus often judged, but not hypocritically.
