Encouraging, Acts 4:36-37

This post covers encouraging others.

Encouraging discusses how we need to also encourage. Earlier in the life of the church, many of the disciples gave money to help the needy. A man named Joseph did so as well, Acts 4:36-37. “Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.”

This characteristic of encouragement caused the apostles to notice and nickname him Barnabus. Also, he not only encouraged others so much that the apostles noticed, but he also sold some land to have money to give to the church to help the needy.

Later, after his conversion, Saul tried unsuccessfully to join the Jerusalem church. They appeared fearful of him. However, Barnabus helped, Acts 9:27. “But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles and declared to them how on the road he had seen the Lord, who spoke to him, and how at Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus.”

This encouragement enabled Saul to successfully preach and teach in Jerusalem.

When the gospel began to be preached to Greeks in Antioch, the Jerusalem church sent Barnabus to encourage them. Acts 11:23-24. he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose, for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith.”

Barnabus even encourages us today. Consider the ways we can encourage.

1.We can speak words of encouragement to teenage Christians trying to develop the ability to teach others.

2.We can find words to remind older Christians that they must not retire from serving the Lord. Instead, even their presence in worship services sets an example for the younger.

3.Express appreciation for song leaders and others carrying out service activities for church assembly. Sometimes, a few words of commendation can mean the difference in some attempting services for the church.

So, what did we learn?

1.Barnabus performed an excellent work by being an encourager.

2.We can follow the example of Barnabus and help others in their service to God.
