Prayer for the Colossians, Colossians 1:9-12

This post seeks to understand Paul’s prayer for the Colossians.

‘Prayer for the Colossians’ discusses the elements in Paul’s petition to God, Colossians 1:9. “…from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you…”

Paul makes plain his request for the Colossians, verse 9. “asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,” Paul wants the Colossians to know and understand what God desires in their lives. This takes a special wisdom—a spiritual wisdom.

But knowing God’s will does not appear as enough. One must not only know but bear fruit in good works, verse 10. …so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God…” This, then represents an important task for the child of God. So, as we bear fruit in God’s service, we will come to know even more of what God wants.

Therefore, it turns out that this type of life grows in power as we proceed along life’s road, verse 11. “…strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience…” This shows us how the Christian life works. We learn what God wants, we bear fruit, and we strengthen our ability to live as a Christian should.

Realizing this about the life of a Christian brings a special joy, verse 11-12. “… with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.” The thanks we give with joy includes a knowledge of our inheritance—a home in heaven on the final judgment day.

Thus, this post seeks to show how Christians should live even today.
