Helping God, Genesis 15:4; 16:1-2

This post concerns Sarai helping fulfill the promise for children from God.

Helping God discusses God’s promise to give Abram and Sarai children.

Earlier, God spoke to Abram about his heir, Genesis 15:4. “…your very own son shall … your heir.”

Sarai decided that since God had not given her children, she should help His promise to succeed by offering her servant, Hagar, to Abram as a wife to produce this heir, Genesis 16:2. “…Behold now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children by her.”

Both Abram and Sarai were old—Abram 85; Sarai 75. Sarai had gone past the usual age of childbearing and decided that she could obtain children by giving her servant girl to Abram as a wife. Abram agreed, and Hagar conceived.

That situation did not work out well because Hagar developed an attitude of superiority over Sarai. Subsequently, Sarai showed such harsh treatment that Hagar ran away.

An angel appeared to Hagar, Genesis 16:10. “I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.” The angel said to call this son Ishmael.

God cared for Ishmael in that twelve princes were born to Ishmael.

Fourteen years later, God spoke to Abraham, Genesis 17:19. “Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac.

As promised by God, Sarah conceived and gave birth to Isaac. God did not need Sarah’s help. He could perform this seemingly impossible task whenever He desired.

Nor does God need our help today. He resurrected Jesus. He can resurrect us and give us a home in heaven without our help.

So, what did we learn?

1.God did not need Sarah’s help to bring about Isaac’s birth.

2.God does not need our help in providing us a home in heaven.
