The Last Week of Jesus, Luke 9:51

This post concerns the last week of Jesus before He faced the cross.

The Last Week  of Jesus discusses the occurrences before His betrayal. Earlier, He showed a determination to face His ultimate fate at the hands of the Jews, Luke 9:51. “When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.”

While traveling to Jerusalem, He provided His third prophecy about what would happen, Matthew 20:18-19. “… going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will…delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles to …mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will…raised on the third day.”

Consider all the events that occurred this last week. On Sunday, He had arrived at Jerusalem to cheering crowds, Matthew 21: 9. “… the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed…he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

But Jesus later lamented that they would not support Him faithfully, Matthew 23:37-39. “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those… sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! …your house…left to you desolate.”

During this last week, Jesus continued to teach in parables. He answered and asked questions of the Pharisees, while Judas Iscariot made plans to betray him to them.

Today, each of us faces two certain events:

  1. We will all die unless Jesus returns to give out judgment.
  2. Even then, we will all die and face eternal judgment by Jesus at some time in the future. We should get ourselves ready.

For example, have you been immersed in baptism as directed by Peter in Acts 2:38 for the remission of your sins?

We will face judgment and our sins.

So, what did we learn?

1.Jesus bravely traveled to Jerusalem to face His enemies and the cross.

2.Jesus showed Himself ready for the cross and the Pharisees.
