The Sifter, Luke 22:31-32
This post covers how the Sifter, Satan, goes about his wicked activities.
The Sifter discusses what Jesus had to say to Peter about Satan, Luke 22:31-32. “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”
This type of activity had happened before when Satan received permission from the Lord to vex Job, Job 2:5. “And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand; only spare his life.”
Satan temped Job to curse God by causing great sores and the accompanying great pain to cover Job’ body.
However, this type of vexation did not happen to Peter. Jesus prayed for him.
But today Satan still looks for people to temp, 1 Peter 5:8. “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
And fortunately, Jesus still intercedes for us. The Hebrews writer says that Jesus, our high priest, occupies that role, Hebrews 7:25. “Consequently, he …able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.”
John makes mention of this intersession, 1 John 2:1. “…we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”
Likewise, the apostle Paul explains where Jesus resides, Romans 8:34. “…Christ Jesus …at the right hand of God, who indeed… interceding for us.”
In summary, like Job, our adversary still looks to sift us. But Jesus intercedes for us so that we do not fall into the trap.
Our challenge remains for us to belong to Jesus so, like Peter, He will pray for and intercede for us. The path to belonging to Jesus includes obeying what Peter said on the day of Pentecost and living faithfully, Acts 2:38. “And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins…”
So, what did we learn?
1.Satan still wants to temp us to sin.
2.Jesus intercedes for us that we do not fall.
3.We must get forgiveness of sins and secure Jesus’ intercession.
