A Miracle and a Sermon, Acts 3
This post concerns the results of a miracle and a sermon by Peter.
A Miracle and a Sermon discusses a miracle by Peter that brought about a sermon.
When Peter and John went up to the temple to pray, they encountered a beggar, disabled from birth. Peter responded, Acts 3:6. “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!”
After they lifted the man, he walked. Note that the miracle performed in the name of Jesus not the apostles or the disabled person, occurred. The people recognized the disabled person, now walking, and gathered about Peter and John.
Peter immediately explained that God glorified His Son whom they killed on the cross. But God resurrected him. (Peter and John were witnesses to this resurrection.) Then, Peter explained the role of faith, Acts 3:16. “And his name— by faith in his name— has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith… through Jesus has given the man this perfect health…”
The faith was by Peter and John, not the disabled person.
Then, Peter said that the crucifixion was in ignorance. But God had foretold it, Acts 3:18. “But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled.”
Next, Peter called for what they needed to do, because they had crucified Jesus, Acts 3:19. “Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may…blotted out,”
Note that two things were required: Repentance and then something afterwards called “turn back.” This turn back corresponds exactly to what Peter had said on Pentecost, Acts 2:38. “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins…”
Therefore, turn back equals baptism.
No doubt Peter would have more fully explained baptism as a requirement except for this interruption by the priests and Sadducees arresting them, Acts 4:3. “And they arrested them and put them in custody…”
So, what did we learn?
1.Peter performed a miracle by faith in the name of Jesus.
2.Peter told the people to repent and undergo baptism.
