Death, Luke 23:44-56

This post concerns the death of Jesus.

Death discusses Jesus’ last hours on the cross, Luke 23:44-46. “It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour… And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.”

Several occurrences show the hand of God. Jesus hung on the cross from mid-morning until three in the afternoon—a lengthy period of agony. Meanwhile, God made it exceedingly dark for three hours. Jesus recognized the power of God and committed His spirit into the care and keeping of the Father. At the same time the curtain in the temple  tore in two. This signified the end of the Jewish system of worship. Later, the Romans came in A.D. 70 and destroyed Jerusalem and the temple.

Jesus’ loud voice shows that He did not die of exhaustion.

Many witnessed Jesus’ death, Luke 23:47-49. “Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!” And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home…”

A Roman centurion, a man who had verified deaths on crosses before, saw and verified that Jesus was dead.

Surprisingly, a member of the Sanhedrin, asked Pilate for Jesus’ body, Luke 23:50-52. “Now there was a man named Joseph… This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus… took it down… wrapped it in a linen shroud …laid him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had ever…laid.”

God arranged for this fool-proof burial in a new, stone tomb.

Luke 23:55-56. “The women who had come with him from Galilee followed…saw the tomb… how his body was laid… prepared spices and ointments.” But they could not anoint His body because it was the Sabbath.

So, what did we learn?

1.Jesus’ death convinced the centurion of His innocence and death.

2.They placed Jesus in a new tomb of stone.

3.Women prepared anointing spices.
