Golden Rule, Matthew 7:12

This post concerns the meaning of the Golden Rule.

Golden Rule discusses the application of this command to our lives, Matthew 7:12. “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this… the Law and the Prophets.” Jesus says this rule for living comes from the law and the prophets of the Old Testament. The Apostle Paul provides a summary of the law and the prophets, Romans 13:9-10. “For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment… summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love… the fulfilling of the law.” Paul explains that love your neighbor as yourself’ was commanded in the Law by quoting Leviticus 19:18. So, we learn that God has always commanded ‘golden-rule living.’

What Jesus commands begins with self. What do I want for me? Then, treatment will follow of our neighbor and fulfill this rule.

This way to live fits into this Sermon on the Mount by Jesus. Earlier He commanded prayer for enemies. I would surely wish for prayers from my enemy. Forgiving others was made a requirement for forgiveness in the Lord’s prayer. When judging others, we must first clean up our sins before talking to others about theirs. All these teachings by Jesus fit under this Golden Rule—we should do for others what we want them to do for us.

The Golden Rule fits what Jesus said about a new commandment, John 13:34. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” We should love one another as Jesus loved us.

So, what did we learn?

1.We should think of what we desire for ourselves when treating others.

2.The Golden Rule concerns treating others as we wish treatment.

3.Love our neighbor as we love self.
