Believing Lies, 1Kings 13:1-4

This post concerns believing the lies of the Devil.

‘Believing Lies’ discusses what happened to a young prophet who believed what an old prophet told him, 1 Kings 13:1-4. “… a man of God came out of Judah by the word of the LORD to Bethel. Jeroboam…standing by the altar to make offerings… And the man cried against the altar by the word of the … “This is the sign that the LORD has spoken: ‘Behold, the altar shall be torn down, and the ashes that are on it shall be poured out…”

An incensed Jeroboam tried to have the prophet arrested. But his outstretched hand froze. The prophet had to entreat God to restore the hand. Jeroboam then offered refreshments and a reward.

But the prophet refused because God had ordered him to not eat or drink while doing this task. He knew God’s orders exactly. Immediately, he started home.

However, an old, fake prophet overtook him, 1 Kings 13:18. “I also am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me… saying, ‘Bring him back with you… that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied to him.”

The young prophet believed and returned home with the old prophet. Then, God spoke through the old prophet, 1 Kings 13:21-22. “Thus says the LORD, ‘Because you have disobeyed the word of the LORD and have not kept the command that the LORD your God commanded you…your body shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’”

Immediately, the young prophet started home. But a lion met him and killed him.

The young prophet had failed to check if the old prophet told the truth. This also happened to Eve when the Devil lied to her.

The Apostle John warns Christians about lies, 1 John 4:1. “…do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

Today, the Devil continues to use lies to turn us from following God. Thus, we need to check the scriptures to know truth to obey God.

So, what did we learn?

1.The Devil continually lies to turn us from obeying God.

2.We should test matters by the scriptures to determine truth.
