Road to Emmaus, Luke 24:13-35
This post concerns evidence of Jesus’ resurrection to two disciples traveled the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus.
The Road to Emmaus discusses what Jesus revealed to two disciples as they walked to Emmaus discussing Jerusalem events, Luke 24:15-16. “Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.”
Jesus sought to join their conversation, Luke 24:17-18. “And he said to them, “What …conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “… you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
Jesus asked, Luke 24:19-24. “… what things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.” That crucifixion was three days ago. They explained that they had hoped Jesus was the redeemer of Israel.
Then, they talked about the visits to the tomb of the women and others. They reported that Angels had said He was alive. But they did not see a resurrected body.
Jesus could see they did not understand what had happened, Luke 24:25-27. “And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them… the Scriptures,”
This covered the main problem with all the disciples—they did not understand the prophecies about the Messiah. So, He explained them.
Then, they urged Him to stay with them in the village. But during a meal they recognized Him. This caused them to return to the group of disciples and proclaim that Jesus had appeared alive.
