Arrest, Luke 22:47-53
This post concerns the arrest of Jesus.
Arrest discusses what happened the night that Jesus was captured before the crucifixion, Luke 22:47-48. “While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”
These verses show that although Judas was backed by the religious leaders and Roman soldiers, he was completely wrong in what he was doing.
Without electric lights, the twelve and Jesus would appear as black shapes. A kiss would designate who Jesus was. Jesus points out that a kiss does not usually mean a betrayal.
The other disciples reacted as faithful followers, Luke 22:49-51. “And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him.”
Jesus had told them to bring swords. Now, they try to use them in an attack action. But Jesus stops them.
The swords were for defense of self, not for attacking others.
So, Jesus points out the incongruent nature of the arresting party, Luke 22:52-53. “Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”
We learn here that Jesus’ miracles and public presence of Jesus was not enough to overcome their evil thoughts and wishes.
So, what did we learn?
1.Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss before a crowd of soldiers and religious leaders.
2.Jesus condones defense but not offense when persecuted.
3.Jesus’ arrest represents the powers of darkness—the Devil.
