Scary Facts, Acts 5:4
This post concerns startling and scary facts about our thinking.
Scary Facts discusses what Peter had to say about Ananias’ thoughts, Acts 5:4. “…While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.”
Ananias and his wife Saphira sold some property and decided to lie about the amount when they donated part of the proceeds to the church. They acted as if the amount they gave comprised the entire amount of the sale. Peter explained that they had lied to God. In addition, this constituted a scary fact about human life, namely that God knows our thoughts.
This shocked Ananias, Acts 5:5. “When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it.” Planning to lie and then doing it cost him his life.
These were scary facts for all. Everyone who heard of it felt great fear because it meant two things.
1.To never lie to God.
2.God knows our thoughts
The apostle Paul guides our thinking, Philippians 4:8. “Finally, brothers, whatever… true, whatever… honorable, whatever… just, whatever…pure, whatever… lovely, whatever… commendable, if there … excellence, if there… anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
Therefore, Paul adds this commandment about our thoughts to our lives. Things not covered by this passage constitute sin. In almost every case, evil thoughts precede the actual acts, and God knows what we think every time.
So, what did we learn?
1.God knows what we think.
2.We must think pure thoughts to please God.
3.Evil thoughts precede sinful actions.
