Model Prayer, Matthew 6:9-13

This post concerns a model prayer given by Jesus.

Model Prayer discusses the important points in this example prayer, Matthew 6:9-13. “Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

We can learn much from this model prayer:

1.Jesus begins with “Our Father in heaven”—a phrase that reminds us of the addressee of our prayers. Thus, we speak to almighty God in prayer!

2.The hallowedness of God’s name stresses the reverence we should give to His name. Trivial, slang uses, or cursing comprises sin and never respects this hallowedness.

3.We should mention the continual growth of God’s kingdom, the church, as a continuation of His will be done. Note that the church, established in Acts 2, exhibited the exercise of God’s will. Baptizing repentant believers causes the kingdom to grow, Acts 2:37-38. “Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said… “Brothers, what shall we do?” …Peter said to them, “Repent … baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins…”

4.Asking for our daily needs, recognizes this need as a blessing of God.

5.Forgiveness of sins occurs as we forgive others. (Luke uses the word sins instead of debts to clearly show the meaning in this part of the prayer, Luke 11:2. “and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone …indebted to us.”)

6.We also should pray for God to guide our lives away from temptation and evil.

Thus, this short prayer by Jesus suggests what we should include in prayer.

Also, these verses contain no implied or stated encouragement to simply recite these words.

So, what did we learn?

1.Hallowing God’s name praises Him.

2.We should pray for the church to grow through baptism of penitent believers.

3.We should pray for daily needs.

4.We should ask for forgiveness for our sins as we forgive others.

5.Prayer should include asking God to guide our lives away from temptations.
