Weeds Among Wheat, Matthew 13:24-26

This post concerns a story Jesus taught about weeds among wheat.

‘Weeds Among Wheat’ discusses the meaning of this parable about the kingdom of heaven, Matthew 13:24-26. “The kingdom of heaven…compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. So, when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also.”

The man’s servants reported the weeds to the owner and asked if they should pull them up. The master said, ‘no,’ the reapers at harvest would gather the weeds and burn them.

Later, Jesus explained the meaning of the parable. The world makes up the field (not local congregations.) Jesus sows the good seed which functions as the sons of the kingdom or Christians. The Devil sows the weeds which comprise the sons of the Evil One.

Therefore, this makes the field represent WHERE Christians belonging to the world-wide church LIVE. The weeds then represent the wicked people living among Christians.

At Judgment, angels (not Christians) reap the field. Then God relegates the evil doers into the eternal fires of hell.

Today this parable functions as prophetic about the future. Thus, we cannot expect the church to be so effective that evil doers will all be destroyed or converted. Instead, people living wicked lives will exist until Judgement Day.

Since angels do the reaping, this parable does not authorize efforts such as the Spanish Inquisition (1478-1834 A.D.) to cut out weeds or sinners, or special non-Biblical congregational actions.

So, what did we learn?

1.The present and the future will involve Christians and evil doers living among each other until judgement.

2.On Judgment Day, angels will reap everyone so that God can place the wicked in the Hellfire for eternity.

3.This parable depicts how we can expect life during our lives today.
