The Essence of Jesus, The Gospel of John
This post concerns the essence of Jesus as shown in the gospel of John.
‘The Essence of Jesus,’ discusses the core of how the gospel of John depicts Jesus.
The opening of the gospel of John goes back to creation, John 1:1. “In the beginning… the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.”
Verse 14 explains that the ‘word’ depicts Jesus, “… the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…” The remainder of this gospel illustrates the true character of Jesus.
Jesus provides seven defining statements beginning with ‘I am…” He said, “I am the bread of life; the light of the world; the door of the sheep; the good shepherd; the resurrection and the life; the way, the truth, and the life; and the true vine. These statements show Jesus as loving, protecting, and guiding us to heaven.
So, during His work with His twelve apostles, Jesus promised the Holy Spirit as a Helper, a Comforter, and a Guide
John 16:13. “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”
Johne 16:26. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
The Holy Spirit began this work with the twelve in Acts 2.
Also, Jesus showed His interest in people by His conversations with Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman.
He explained being born again to Nicodemus, John 3:1. “… unless one… born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
He explained ‘living water’ to the woman, John 4:10. “If you knew the gift of God, and who…saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
Thus, today this gospel still dispenses knowledge about Jesus and salvation.
So, what did we learn?
1.Jesus showed interest in ordinary people.
2.Jesus showed activity in creation.
