Two Prophetic Parables, Matthew 13:44-46

This post concerns two prophetic parables about the Kingdom of Heaven or the church.

‘Two Prophetic Parables’ describes the future character of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Thus, Jesus clearly showed the interchangeability of the church and the Kingdom of Heaven when He discussed building His church on Peter’s statement about the Messiah and the Son of God, Matthew 16:18-19. “…on this rock I will build my church…I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven… whatever you bind on earth…bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth… loosed in heaven.”

Thus, Jesus says He will build the church on Peter’s statement about Jesus as the Son of God.

The first of these prophetic parables has to do with a man accidently finding a treasure in a field, Matthew 13:44. “The kingdom of heaven… like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”

Two points emerge:

  1. The kingdom or church has a large and desirable value.
  2. The man’s knowledge about the value of the treasure prompted him to give up all to get it.

So, this knowledge comes from knowing God’s word, 2 Timothy 3:16. “All Scripture…breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God… equipped for every good work.”

In the second parable, a man searches for a great pearl, Matthew 13:45-46. “…the kingdom of heaven… like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

These two parables teach the extreme value of the kingdom—worth all one has.

In addition, these parables show the immense value of knowledge—knowing about the kingdom of heaven or the body of Christ—recognizing the kingdom when you find it. That knowledge comes by reading and studying the Bible.

Therefore, these parables stress the value of the church to us today.

So, what did we learn?

1.The kingdom or church has tremendous value and worth all we have.

2.We should equip ourselves with Bible knowledge to recognize the kingdom when we find it.
