TULIP, Ephesians 1:4

This post concerns the acronym, TULIP, a descriptor of Calvinism.

This post, ‘TULIP,’ describes what the Bible teaches about Calvinism.

The meaning of the five major tenets of Calvinism:

a.T stands for total depravity, supposedly a descriptor of every person at birth.

b.U stands for unconditional election. God chose some individuals for savation before birth.

c.L stands for limited atonement. Jesus supposedly died for only the elect persons chosen by God.

d.I stands for irresistible grace. So, those chosen by God can do nothing to stop salvation.

e.P stands for perseverance. Those chosen for salvation cannot fall away and be lost.

However, scriptures show that none of these represent the truth.

TOTAL DEPRAVITY- Hear what Peter says in Acts 10 about the state of Cornelius, Acts 10:34. “…God shows no partiality…in every nation anyone who fears him and does what… right …acceptable to him.” Therefore, everyone exists as not totally depraved. God accepts any who fear him and do right.

UNCONDITIONAL ELECTION-Romans 10:13. “For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek… the same Lord…Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him.”  So, Paul says that salvation is available to all who call.

LIMITED ATONEMENT-1 John 2:2. “He…the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but… the sins of the whole world.” Therefore, Christ died for the entire world.

IRRESISTIBLE GRACE- Steven describes the Jews, Acts 7:51. “…you always resist the Holy Spirit.” So, Steven says they could and did resist the Holy Spirit.

PERSEVERANCE OF THE SAINTS- Paul described Christians, Galatians 5:4. “You are severed from Christ… you have fallen away from grace.” Thus, Christians can fall away.

Therefore, today let us reject all of the doctrine of Calvinism as unscriptural.

So, what did we learn?

1.The scriptures do not justify Calvinism, designated by TULIP.

2.Predestination involves those that have been added to the church by baptism.
