The Value of the Gospel of Matthew, Matthew 1:22-23

This post concerns the value of the gospel of Matthew today to prove the Deity of Jesus.

‘The Value of the Gospel of Matthew’ describes how this gospel provides important proof about Jesus as the Son of God.

Ever wonder why God saw fit to include, not one, but four gospels in the Bible? Anything repeated in the scriptures emphasizes its importance. Four gospels surely stress the importance of the life and mission of Jesus Christ. Therefore, Matthew occupies a prominent place in the foursome.

Some would say that Matthew represents God’s efforts to save the Jews.  The genealogy goes back to Abraham and includes King David. Also, Matthew remains the only gospel to use the Jewish phrase ‘kingdom of heaven,’ instead of ‘kingdom of God.’

In addition, this gospel reports over 60 direct references to Jesus fulfilling Old Testament prophesy. Further, 53 references of these references have the phrase ‘all this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by …….’  Then it explains who said it.

These references begin in Matthew chapter one when the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary with Jesus. Joseph feared taking her as his wife. But an angel spoke, Matthew 1:20-23. “…not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that…conceived in her… from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel…” This prophet was Isaiah.

But the value of Matthew to convert the Jewish people pales beside the practical use to us in modern days. Thus, Matthew’s use of the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies becomes powerful proof for us today that proves Jesus Christ was the Son of God.

So, what did we learn?

1.The fulfilled prophecies stressed in Matthew provide definitive proof that Jesus was Deity.

2.Modern man should review these prophecies and come to faith and strengthen faith in Jesus.
