A Strange Purchase, Jeremiah 32:6-7

This post concerns a strange purchase made by an imprisoned prophet.

A Strange Purchase discusses why God wanted imprisoned Jeremiah to buy a field, Jeremiah 32:6-7. “The word of the LORD came to me: Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle will come to you and say, ‘Buy my field…at Anathoth,”

Jeremiah obeyed and bought the field. This strange command came during Jeremiah’s imprisonment as the city fell to the Babylonians. God explained that buying the field signified that restoration of the city would occur by the hand of God.

What God had said in His word happened to the city of Jerusalem. Restoration occurred seventy years later.

For today, consider this solemn warning, Hebrews 9:27. “it…appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,” The day of Judgment will come, and we will all experience it.

The Apostle Paul makes the same point, 2 Corinthians 5:10. “…we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what…due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.”

Judgment will involve how we have lived.

The Apostle John provides insight, Rev 20:12“Then I saw a great white throne and him who… seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them…I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead…judged by what…written in the books, according to what they had done.”

Thus, just like in Jeremiah’s day, God has provided us a warning as to what will happen. We should make ready because God’s word and promises always come true even when unexpected.

So, what did we learn?

1.Just as God prophesied by ordering Jeremiah to buy a field, Jerusalem experienced restoration.

2.God warns us of a coming judgment that will occur because God has promised it.
