The Storm, Acts 27

This post concerns the storm during Paul’s trip to Rome on a ship.

‘The Storm’ describes what happened to Paul on this trip.

The centurion in charge of taking Paul for trial in Rome put Paul on a ship from Adramyttium while looking for a vessel headed to Rome.

At Myra, the centurion put his prisoners on a large ship from Alexandria destined for Rome with a cargo of wheat. They sailed west to Cnidus and then south to Fair Havens on the island of Crete.

At that point, Paul warned the centurion and ship owner of the dangers of further sailing at that time of year. But since the harbor was deemed unsuitable for wintering, they decided to try to reach Phoenix to winter there.

However, a ‘northeastern’ wind blew the ship out to sea and engulfed it in a violet storm for so long they were lost at sea unable to guide by the stars. This dire situation caused the sailors to first undergird the ship and then to jettison the tackle of the ship and finally the cargo. Paul spoke, Acts 27:21- . “…now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship… an angel of the God… whom I worship…said, ‘Do not be afraid…God has granted you all those who sail with you… take heart…for I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told…But we must run aground on some island.”

After fourteen days, soundings showed the ship approaching some land. So, Paul encouraged everyone on board to eat, Acts 27:33. “Today is the fourteenth day that you have continued in suspense and without food, having taken nothing.”

Paul himself took some food and prayed before them. This encouraged them to also eat.

At daybreak, the crew tried to steer the ship toward shore but ran aground. So, everyone abandoned the ship and safely swam or floated on ship hardware to shore.

This chapter teaches us that God cares for His people.

So, what did we learn?

1.God cared for Paul on the way to Rome.

2.A storm destroys the ship, but not their lives.
