In Jerusalem, Acts 21:1-46
This post concerns warnings and what happened to Paul in Jerusalem.
In Jerusalem discusses the warnings Paul received on his way to Jerusalem.
From Miletus, Paul sailed on two different ships to arrive at Tyre. The brethren, by the influence of the Holy Spirit, urged him not to go to Jerusalem. But Paul pressed on.
When they arrived at Casarea, the nine brethren in the group stayed with Philip, the evangelist. While there, Agabus, a prophet from Jerusalem, bound his hands and feet with Paul’s belt to show what would happen in Jerusalem. Still, Paul would not give up, Acts 21:13. “What… you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I… ready not only…imprisoned but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”
In Jerusalem, Paul met with James and the elders to report his activities among the Gentiles.
After they had glorified God together, the elders relayed a rumor among the believing Jews about Paul. Some of these Jews thought Paul had taught that they should forsake the law, not circumcise their sons, and not live by the Jewish customs.
The elders suggested that Paul pay the expenses of four men under a vow to show that this rumor was false. Paul agreed and did so.
In his teachings, Paul had made it clear that Jews did not have to keep the law religiously but could continue to live as a Jew if they desired. He had had Timothy circumcised to make him more acceptable to a Jewish audience. He had written that Christians were not under the law anymore, Galatians 3:11; 24-27. “…no one… justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith…
…So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might…justified by faith. But now that faith has come… no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus… all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as…baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”
So, what did we learn?
1.Imprisonment awaited Paul in Jerusalem.
2.Being a nationalistic Jew did not matter religiously.
