Faith Testing, Mark 5:18-19

This post involves testing faith.

Faith Testing discusses how our belief in Jesus can fail with temptations.

Jesus did many mighty miracles—the dead were brought to life, demons were cast out, leprosy was healed. But where were these cured people when Jesus came to trial and then crucifixion? No one stood up for Jesus at His trial. Only John came to the cross.

However, total abandonment was not true for everyone. Once in the country of the Gergesenes, Jesus cast out a legion of demons from a man living in the tombs. When Jesus got ready to leave that side of Galilee, the now cured man spoke, Mark 5:18-20, “As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him… he did not permit him but said… “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him.”

This man when possessed of demons lived in the tombs. But Jesus healed him so that he could live in society. He showed his gratitude by asking to be with Jesus. Failing that, he obeyed and did what Jesus told him to do—tell others about the mercy of Jesus.

Thus, we can parallel their faith—strong some of the time and weak at others. We need relief from the terrible consequence of sin. We will spend eternity in hell unless Jesus provides forgiveness. So, we need to obey Peter’s admonition to believers, Acts 2:37-38. “… “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins…”

Let us face our situation. Without faith and obedience, we will lose our souls. Therefore, like the cured Gerasene man, we should stand up for Jesus in today’s world and exhibit our faith.

So, what did we learn?

1.We owe Jesus everything, because He died for us and provides eternal salvation.

2.We should show our faith in Jesus in this life.
