Vision and Commission, Isaiah 6:1-10

This post involves a vision and then a commission by God.

Vision and Commission discusses what Isaiah saw in a vision from God, Isaiah 6:1-10. “…I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up…Above him stood the seraphim. … And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy… the LORD of the whole earth…full of his glory… I said: “Woe … lost… a man of unclean lips,”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth… “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt… taken away, and your sin atoned for…

I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.”

… he said, “Go, and say to this people: “‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’ Make the heart of this people dull…their ears heavy…blind their eyes; lest they see with their eyes…hear with their ears… understand with their hearts…turn and be healed.”

This vision begins by describing the holiness and greatness of God. Then, Isaiah realizes his sinful nature.

Humans cannot cleanse themselves of wrongdoing. Only God can accomplish cleansing of sin. So, God sends a seraphim to cleanse Isaiah.

Then, God wants a spokesperson. When Isaiah volunteers, God explains the difficulty of his mission.

At this point, God prophesies that a case of judicial hardening has fallen on Israel. When people steadfastly turn their hearts away and refuse to listen, God sends them a hardened heart. Pharoah shows judicial hardening (See Exodus 8 and 9.) Likewise, the Apostle Paul describes three cases in Romans 1:24-32 in which God gives up on them and allows them to have hardened hearts.

In summary, Israel had hardened their hearts so long that God deemed them hopeless.

Let us strive to cleanse our lives of sin and take the gospel to the lost of the world, even if they have hardened hearts.

So, what did we learn?

1.Holiness characterizes God.

2.God desires us to take His message to the world.

3.When people determine to ignore God, He turns away from them.
