Resolutions for the End, 1 Samuel 28:5-8; 1 Kings 11:1-4

This post concerns resolutions derived from the end of life for three kings.

Resolutions for the End discusses lessons from the sins of Kings Saul, David, and Solomon near the end of their lives.

These Kings, and we today, have a challenge to remain true in old age.

King Saul fell away from God and sought out the occult, 1 Samuel 28:5-8. “When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid… Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD did not answer him, either by dreams, or by Urim, or by prophets. Then Saul said… “Seek out for me a woman… a medium, that I may… inquire of her.”

Saul went to the witch of Endor who God enabled to bring back Samuel from the grave. Samuel told Saul that he would die in battle against the Philistines.

In a similar vein, God allowed Satan to tempt King David, 1 Chronicles 21:1-2. “Then Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel. So, David said to Joab… “Go, number Israel…that I may know their number.”

God responded, 1 Chronicles 21:8. “But God was displeased with this thing, and he struck Israel.”  God sent a pestilence and many died.

David repented. Then, God told the prophet Gad to direct David to build an altar on the threshing floor of Ornan. There, Solomon later built the temple.

Near the end of his life King Solomon turned from worshipping God to worshipping idols, 1 Kings 11:4. “For when Solomon … old… his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart…not wholly true to the LORD his God…

These three kings illustrate the difficulty of remaining true to God when old. Satan never stops his campaign to cause us to sin, even in old age.

Unrepentant sin at death in either young or old will cause the loss of the soul and eternal punishment.

In the year ahead, let us resolve to stay true to God.

So, what did we learn?

1.The Bible provides examples of three famous kings turning away from God in old age.

2.We must remain true to the worship of God all our lives.

3.We must resolve to worship God alone.
