Teaching Our Children: Jacob’s Parental Errors
This post focuses on Jacob’s Parental errors.
Jacob’s Parental Errors discusses how Jacob managed his boys. His problems began when his parents. Isaac and Rebekah divided their love for their two boys, Genesis 25:28. “Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.?” This division of love brought conflict. Then, by trickery and deceit, Jacob obtained the birthright and blessing belonging to Esau. As expected, Esau showed great anger.
Because Esau threatened to kill Jacob, Isaac and Rebecca sent Jacob to Haran to live with his uncle, Laban. When there, Jacob’s work agreement with Laban stated that after seven years of labor, he could have Rachel for a wife. But Laban tricked Jacob. So, unknown to Jacob, he substituted Leah in the wedding night tent so that the older girl was married first. Jacob was livid.
However, at that point, Jacob agreed to work seven more years to obtain Rachel immediately.
During the next few years, eleven boys were born into Jacob’s family from Rachel and Leah and their two handmaids.
Like his father, Jacob chiefly loved one boy, Joseph, and gave him exclusively a coat of many colors at a time when coats were gray or black. Jacob, no doubt, loved all the boys. But Joseph was loved more.
So, unhappiness developed between the loved boy and the other ten. One day Jacob sent Joseph to check on the other boys who were shearing sheep. The ten boys kidnapped Joseph and subsequently sold him as a slave to Egypt. Then, they lied to their father Jacob. They splashed sheep blood on the many-colored coat and claimed that wild beasts had killed Joseph.
As expected, Jacob mourned deeply.
This kind of problem often develops for those families where one child gets the majority of love.
What should parents do?
1.Love all children the same.
2.Love a child in a way the child understands it.
So, what did we learn?
1.Loving one child more than another causes conflict.
2.Each child should feel loved.
