The Ascension, Acts 1:9-14

This post concerns Jesus’ ascension and the initial obedience of the apostles to go to Jerusalem.

The Ascension discusses what it meant for Jesus to return to heaven, Acts 1:9-11. “And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

The white robes signify that the two men were angels. Note, they convey a significant fact—Jesus will return to the earth for judgment in exactly the same way. Those who proclaim that Jesus has already returned must be in error.

This ascension of Jesus signifies a transfer of guidance of the apostles to the Holy Spirit. Jesus’ physical presence and personal instructions have ceased. Now the apostles will receive instruction and guidance from the Holy Spirit.

Consider the fate of the resurrected body of Jesus. Burial was not an option. He would die no more. God’s plan, therefore, was for Jesus to ascend back to heaven.

The eleven obeyed and returned to Jerusalem, Acts 1:12-14. “Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.”

The citing of the names of the eleven signifies the absence of Judas Iscariot. This will change very soon.

So, what did we learn?

1.Jesus ascended to heaven.

2.Angels reported that Jesus will return as He ascended.

3.The eleven obeyed and returned to Jerusalem.
