God’s Requirements, Micah 6:8

This post focuses on God’s requirements for Judah and Israel.

God’s Requirements discusses how to live during the Old Testament, Micah 6:8. “… what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Israel and Judah were not living this way.

Unfortunately, many people today think that these three requirements cover all they need to do. Thus, they imagine there is no need for baptism, church attendance, or Sunday worship. To them, salvation comes from a good attitude and good citizenship. However, this text only applies to the nations of Israelites and not directly to us today.

But at the same time, some New Testament passages stress these principles. Jesus condemned the Pharisees for their neglect, Luke 11:42. “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God.”

Doing justice means to treat God and others justly and reverently by obeying God’s commands in daily life and worship. Also, justice for everyone should have shown itself as a constant in their lives.

In addition, Christians should provide kindness to everyone. The Apostle Paul cites a need for kindness, James 1:27. “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction…”

James also stresses humbly walking with God, James 4:10. “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.”

To walk humbly with God results when disciples recognize God’s holiness and righteousness, obey His commands, and worship him according to His directions.

Although this text in Micah applied directly to the Israelites and not us, we recognize that these principles apply to Christians today because the New Testament stresses them.

In addition, Peter stressed baptism for the penitent believer to receive the forgiveness of sins Acts 2:38. “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins,”

So, what did we learn?

1.God requires that we treat Him and people justly.

2.God demands that disciples have kindness in their lives.

3.God’s requisites include humbly recognizing and walking with Him.

4.Forgiveness of sins comes through baptism.
