Jesus Appears to the Apostles, Luke 24:36-49

This post covers the resurrection day when Jesus appears to the apostles.

Jesus Appears to the Apostles to offer proof of His resurrection, Luke 24:36-37. “As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit.”

They thought He was a spirit. But He soon gave evidence of having a body, Luke 24:39. “See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”

“…They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them”

Jesus then explained what they needed to know, Luke 24:44-47. “Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, “Thus it …written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins… proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.”

Thus, they needed to understand that the Old Testament prophesied the results they had observed. The Messiah would suffer and die and undergo resurrection. This was the working of the plan of God. Next, they preached repentance and forgiveness from Jerusalem.

Then, He explained their role, Luke 24:48-49. “You … witnesses of these things. And behold, I … send… the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until … clothed with power from on high.”

They were to receive power from God to do the job of witnessing. But they were to wait in Jerusalem for this power.

So, what did we learn?

1.Jesus proved He had a resurrected body by eating in front of them.

2.Jesus explained that He was the subject of the prophecies in the Old Testament.

3.They were to wait in Jerusalem for power to witness.
