The Other Judas, John 14:22

This post concerns the other Judas, the son of James.

The Other Judas discusses this disciple as an apostle. Jesus prayed all night and then designated the twelve… Luke 6:13-16. “… when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew… and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon…called the Zealot… Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot”

Note that Jesus prayed before these important decisions.

Several of these men are well known because they play important roles later. Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus. But the son of James, appears only one other time in scripture, John 14:22. “Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?”

In this question, this question depicts the attitude of the apostles— Jesus would set up an earthly kingdom. This attitude remained until Jesus ascended into heaven, Acts 1:6. “…when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” Jesus answered that only God knows.

Consider what we can learn from Judas, not Iscariot:

  1. He spent about three years hearing Jesus teach, saw the miracles He did, and despite observing the cruel treatment by the Jews, this disciple remained faithful, unlike Judas Iscariot.
  2. The mission of this apostle and all the apostles became serving as witnesses about the resurrection of Jesus, Acts 1:8. “…you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
  3. In Acts 2:1-4, this disciple with the other apostles received the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
  4. Despite not being chosen like Peter to deliver the first public gospel sermon, this apostle was available to help baptize believers on the day of Pentecost.

In summary, this disciple became a faithful apostle notwithstanding not being in a place of prominence or often mentioned in the New Testament.

Today, we need to remain faithful like this apostle when others get publicity and notice.

So, what did we learn?

1.Judas, not Iscariot, became a faithful follower of Jesus.

2.This apostle remained faithful despite persecution.
