Free Will, Deuteronomy 30:19-20
This post concerns our use of free will.
‘Free Will’ discusses what the Bible says about our decisions about sin.
The Bible has many examples that show that God allows people to freely decide to obey or resist His commands. Consider the Garden of Eden. Eve was tricked, but Adam was not, 1 Timothy 2:14. “and Adam…not deceived, but the woman…deceived and became a transgressor.” Thus, Adam understood and chose to participate in the sin.
Consider Cain. Genesis 4:8. “… And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.” Cain chose to kill Abel. He was not forced to do so. But he chose to disobey God and kill his brother.
Moses addressed the Children of Israel before he died, Deuteronomy 30:19-20. “I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing, and curse. Therefore, choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the LORD your God,” Moses clearly states that the Children of Israel had a choice. If they chose to obey God, they could live in the land and have the life that God had planned for them. If not, death and a curse awaited.
Once man sinned, God did not have to send Jesus to provide salvation. But God has free will and created man in His own image with free will.
The Apostle Paul says we can always choose to repel temptation with God’s help, 1 Corinthians 10:13. “No temptation has overtaken you that… not common to man. God…faithful, and he will not let you…tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may…able to endure it.
Therefore, I am free to choose to fall to or repel temptation. I have free will.
In summary, God allows man to have free will and choose to serve or reject Him. Then, choosing to serve and worship God becomes the proper choice for us today.
Today, people still have free will to serve God or reject Him.
So, what did we learn?
1.People have free choice to serve or reject God.
2.God provides a way to escape temptations.
3.We should choose to serve God.
