Paul in Prison, Acts 24:1-27
This post concerns Paul in prison at Caesarea.
‘Paul in Prison’ describes what happened to Paul while imprisoned by Felix, Acts 24:27. “When two years had elapsed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus. And desiring to do the Jews a favor, Felix left Paul in prison.”
Two years before, the tribune had arranged for Paul’s safe transport to Felix at Caesarea at night. Five days later, the high priest brought a Roman lawyer before Felix to try Paul. He accused Paul of stirring up riots and profaning the temple.
Paul replied, Acts 24:11-13. “You can verify that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship in Jerusalem, and they did not find me disputing with anyone or stirring up a crowd, either in the temple or in the synagogues or in the city. Neither can they prove to you what they now bring up against me.”
Then, Paul said as a member of what the Jews called a sect that he believed in the law and the prophets. In addition, he believed in the resurrection.
Paul had brought alms and offerings, Acts 24:18-19. “While I was doing this, they found me purified in the temple, without any crowd or tumult. But some Jews from Asia—they ought to be here before you and to make an accusation, should they have anything against me.”
Paul also stated that he had acknowledged this belief in the resurrection before the council.
Felix knew about the Jews and decided to keep Paul in prison till the tribune came down. Meanwhile, Felix and his wife, Drusilla, came and listened to Paul preach about righteousness, temperance, and the coming day of judgment. This terrified Felix. He promised to listen again to Paul later.
Felix also tried to get Paul to give him money for release from prison. This state of affairs went on for two years until Porcius Festus became governor in place of Felix.
So, what did we learn?
1.Felix did not give a judgment against Paul.
2.The preaching of Paul terrified Felix and Drusilla, his wife.
3.Festus became governor in place of Felix.
