Speaking to the Mob, Acts 22:1-29
This post concerns Saul, now called Paul, speaking to the mob.
‘Speaking to the Mob’ describes what Paul said in his defense.
Paul began by identifying himself, Acts 22:3. “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated at the feet of a Gamaliel according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God as all of you are this day.”
This introduction caught their attention. Then, he told them of his zeal against Christianity, Acts 22:4. “I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering to prison both men and women,”
Next, he explained that on the way to Damascus, a light appeared, Acts 22:6. “…a great light from heaven suddenly shone around me. And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”
He asked as to whose voice it was. Jesus answered, “I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.” Blinded, Paul then asked what he should do. Jesus said to go into Damascus and he would be told.
Led into the city, he fasted for three days until Ananias came and miraculously restored his sight. Then, Ananias explained that God appointed him, Paul, to know His will and to hear Jesus’ voice. Then Annanias told him what to do about his sins, Acts 22:16. “Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins,”
Then, Paul told of God telling him in a trance to go to the Gentiles. That caused the mob to throw dirt into the air and show such anger that the Tribune ordered soldiers to bring Paul into the barracks for safety. There, he ordered flogging but stopped when Paul asserted his Roman citizenship.
The next day he brought Paul before the council in order to determine what evil he had done.
So, what did we learn?
1.Paul described his conversion and mission to the Gentiles.
2.In the Roman barracks, Paul’s Roman citizenship saved him from flogging.
