Nebuchadnezzar’s Problem, Daniel 4

This post concerns Nebuchadnezzar’s Problem of excessive pride.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Problem discusses how the pride of this Babylonian king led to a terrible consequence rendered by God, Daniel 4.

Nebuchadnezzar had a dream. He saw a large, beautiful tree that all kinds of animals utilized for food and shelter. Then, a holy one from heaven decreed ‘cut it down and lop off its branches but leave the stump with a metal band around it.’ The wise men of his kingdom could not offer a suitable interpretation.

But Daniel gave the meaning as a message from God. The tree and stump stood for Nebuchadnezzar. He would lose his mental ability, exist, and live in the field like an animal for seven time periods. Then, he would know that God rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom He wishes.

Daniel then gave advice, Daniel 4:27. “Therefore, O king… break off your sins by practicing righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the oppressed, that there may perhaps be a lengthening of your prosperity.”

Apparently, the king did not heed this good advice, Daniel 4:29-30. “At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, and the king answered and said, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?”

Note, this statement did not contain recognition of the control of God and His blessings. He only gives credit to himself and brags on his achievements. Immediately, the results of the dream came true. He lived as an animal for seven time periods.

Then, he recognized God’s power, Daniel 4:34. “At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever,”

He regained his kingdom again. Thereafter, he praised God, Daniel 4:37. “Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, …those who walk in pride he …able to humble.

Let us also humble ourselves by using the lesson taught to Nebuchadnezzar.

So, what did we learn?

1.God controls all kingdoms.
