Teaching Our Children: Parent Mistakes
This post concerns mistakes a parent can make when raising children.
Parent Mistakes discusses an error which a Biblical parent made with his children.
King David illustrates a terrible series of mistakes. He had nineteen sons and one daughter from eight wives and numerous concubines.
Consider what we know of some of them. The oldest, Amnon, raped his half-sister, Tamar. Absalom, her half-brother, became extremely angry, but did nothing for two years. Instead, with the help of his half-brothers, he then had Amnon killed.
Then, six years later, Absalom rose up against his father, King David, and tried to take the kingship for himself. However, he failed and was killed.
When David aged, his fourth son, Adonijah, also tried to wrest the kingdom into his own hands.
David’s children were not deeply religious. This mistake of not teaching his children God’s word, to be honest, to have integrity, and to value human life loomed large in David’s life. He seemed unable to overcome these evil tendencies in his children that continually cropped up in their lives.
Consider what we as parents should do as our children grow.
1.They should hear you explain respect for God and the Bible as the word of God. This can begin at an early age as a daily or nightly reading of the Bible followed by a discussion of what it means.
2.Attendance every Sunday at congregational worship services will reinforce the importance of worship of God.
3.A vital concern as the children grow up will exist for parents to monitor their children’s activities so corrective action can repair errors in their lives.
4.Parents need to love the child in a way the child understands their love for them.
So, what did we learn?
1.King David erred by not teaching his children to love and obey the word of God.
2.We need to teach our children to love, honor, and obey God.
