Response, Acts 2:37-47
This post concerns the response of the crowd to Peter’s sermon.
The Response discusses the meaning of what happened after Peter preached, Acts 2:37-40. “Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
Peter said, “Repent and… baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
For the promise … for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”
Then, some 3000 believers repented and responded to baptism.
So, believers should repent of their sins followed by baptism. Thus, these actions provide forgiveness of sins, even the sin of crucifying Jesus. Also, the gift of the Holy Spirit—the forgiveness of sins—provided membership in the body of Christ— the church.
In addition, this passage states God’s rules and requirements for salvation.
After that, under the direction of the Holy Spirit, the apostles formed these 3000 into a congregation, a church, Acts 2:42-43.
“ They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. … awe came upon every soul… many wonders and signs…done through the apostles.”
Then, they began immediately to have a fellowship that included prayers and partaking of the Lord’s Supper. Thus, signs and wonders signified the approval of the Holy Spirit.
These actions allowed the Lord to add to their number day by day those being saved.
So, what did we learn?
1.Peter explained that after believing, repentance and baptism were necessary for forgiveness of sins.
2.The Holy Spirit directed the apostles to form those converted into a congregation, a church.
