The Doubter, John 20:25

This post concerns Thomas, the doubter, and what it means to us.

The Doubter discusses what Thomas said about Jesus’ resurrection. Thomas was a genuine follower. He was ready to die for Jesus, John 11:16, “…Thomas, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

On the day of Jesus’ resurrection, Jesus appeared to ten apostles, John 20:19-20. “… Jesus came and stood among them and said… “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.”

Thus, Jesus made sure they believed that He rose from the dead. He was not a ghost.

This was a group of ten because Judas had killed himself and Thomas was not present. Was Thomas discouraged by the cross? John 20:24-25. “…Thomas, …was not with them when Jesus came… the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

Eight days later Jesus appeared again, John 20:27-28. “Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”

A confession of faith replaced Thomas’ doubt.

Today, the many doubters cannot physically see Jesus’ resurrected body to remove their doubts. However, consider the scriptures, 2 Timothy 3:16-17. “All Scripture… breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

Thus, believing the scriptures are from God becomes one of the first steps to removing doubt, being correctly religious, and pleasing God.

Therefore, reading and study of the scriptures can provide all we need to remove our doubts and become complete before God.

So, what did we learn?

1.Thomas’ doubt was removed by visually seeing the resurrected Jesus.

2.You can remove doubts today by reading and believing the scriptures.
