Born Again, John 3:3
This post concerns the meaning of born again.
Born Again discusses Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus about the kingdom of God, John 3:1-2. “…Nicodemus…came to Jesus by night and said… “Rabbi, we know that you… a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God…with him.”
So, the miracles that Jesus did convinced Nicodemus to believe in the Deity of Jesus.
Then Jesus perceived that Nicodemus wanted to know about the kingdom of God and answered, John 3:3. “…unless one… born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Nicodemus did not understand and asked, ‘how could this happen for an old person.’ Jesus explained, John 3:5. “truly, I say to you, unless one… born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”
What Jesus said concerned a birth like a physical birth when one begins life as a baby. First, belonging to the kingdom of God involves being born as a spiritual baby. This process for a believer equals being born of water and the Spirit.
Thus, Jesus says born of water and the Spirit equals baptism.
This command by Jesus fits exactly what Peter said to believers at Pentecost about salvation, Acts 2:38. “And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise… for you and for your children and for all who… far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
Therefore, God calls believing people to salvation through repentance and baptism.
So, what did we learn?
1.To enter the kingdom of God, one must be born again.
2.This rebirth occurs for believers by repenting of sins and being baptized.
