THE FOURTH BEATITUDE: Hunger/Thirst Matthew 5:6
Hunger/Thirst discusses what Jesus said in the fourth beatitude.
When we hunger/thirst, we satisfy ourselves with food and drink. The soul should likewise hunger, Matthew 5:6. “Blessed… those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they… satisfied.”
Jesus after His fasting, must have embodied great hunger and thirst, Matthew 4:2. “And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.” He used the same word for hunger in this beatitude. This depicts how much we should desire righteousness.
The devil used this intense hunger and thirst to tempt him. Although we know about hunger, Jesus’ intense hunger involved more than we can fathom. But the hunger and thirst for righteousness of this beatitude describes what we need.
What is righteousness? Doing right in our activities comes about when we add righteousness to our lives. God illustrate the ultimate example of righteousness. He always does right. So, seeking to copy God helps us add righteousness to our lives.
Jesus says those with this great hunger and thirst will be satisfied. What does this mean? Note that He also told us how to eat, John 6:35. “Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” Thus, believing in and following Jesus’ words should provide this sought-for satisfaction.
However, we are solemnly warned to be careful with our righteousness, Matthew 6:1. “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.”
Being in Jesus as obedient children will result in our righteousness, 2 Corinthians 5:21. “For our sake he made him… sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
As we think about the blessings of God, we ask ourselves, “What do we want from life? Does hunger and thirst for righteousness captivate our wants?
Finally, does my faith strongly trust in this promise of Jesus?
So, what did we learn?
1.God blesses those who truly seek for the righteousness of a child of God.
2.Flaunting righteousness before people must never occur.
