Cain’s Problem, Genesis 4:2-5

This post concerns Cain’s problem and what caused his failure to worship correctly.

Cain’s Problem discusses his actions when called upon to worship God, Genesis 4:2-5. “Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. In the course of time Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So, Cain was very angry, and his face fell.”

God had instructed Cain and Abel how to worship because Abel offered by faith, Hebrews 11:4. “By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts.”

One can only offer by faith when one hears the word of the Lord, Romans 10:17. “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”

God explained to Cain his error, Genesis 4:6-7. “The LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.”

Thus, Cain had a mental problem. He knew how God wanted him to worship. But he offered what he wanted instead of what God commanded.

So, in these passages, God warns us and Cain to rule over any impulse to substitute our will and wants over what He has instructed. God reminded Cain about sin. It exists ever present and ready to come into our lives when we decide that our wants are just as good as what God wants.

To us, Cain stands as a model of sinful behavior that we must avoid. Let us rule over temptations to do as we want instead of what God wants.

So, what did we learn?

1.Cain sinned by not offering by faith.

2.Abel offered according to God’s commands.

3.We must also obey God exactly.
