Church Music, Ephesians 5:18-20
This post concerns church music used by the New Testament church to glorify God
Church Music describes what the Bible teaches about acceptable praise to God, Ephesians 5:18-20. “…be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,”
Paul also mentioned singing, Colossians 3:16. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
This fits what the Hebrew writer wrote about worshipping on Sunday, Hebrews 10:24-25. “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as… the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
Thus, the New Testament church used vocal music as part of encouraging each other and praising God.
Authority for organs, pianos and other instruments does not exist in the New Testament. So, no scriptural authority exists to add any kind of instrument to a worship service.
A cappella, meaning ‘like a church,’ remains as the only music practiced by New Testament churches.
Historically, the first church installed an organ about 670 AD. By the 1400s most Catholic churches had added organs. Pianos were not added to Protestant Churches until about 1800 AD.
Greek Orthodox churches have not added organs or pianos and still have only vocal music.
If we wish to follow the Bible, then we will have only a cappella music as worship.
Let us follow only the Bible as we seek to please God by using our voices.
So, what did we learn?
