The New Testament Matthew 1; Mark 1; Luke 1; John 1

This post concerns the New Testament and God’s plan of salvation for humanity.

The New Testament provides the fulfillment of God’s promises and the result of God’s plan to save His people. In two of the gospels—Matthew and Luke—an angel predicts the birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, and the birth of the forerunner, John the Baptist. Mark begins with the forerunner’s work. John makes a clear statement that Jesus was Deity.

So, as for His work, Jesus selected and taught the twelve apostles and preached about the kingdom of God to the Jewish people. In the main, the Jews rejected Jesus and His preaching and goaded Pilate into crucifying Him. But on the Sunday after his death, He arose from the tomb and showed himself to many witnesses. Then, after 50 days, He ascended back to heaven. On Pentecost, He sent the Holy Spirit to guide the twelve to preach God’s plan of salvation and set up the church, Acts 2:37-38; 47 “Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins…

…And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

Then, the remaining books of the New Testament contain instructions on how to live as a baptized believer—a Christian.

Finally, the book of Revelation also forecasts the end of time, the judgement of sinners, and the final defeat of Satan and his angels.

So, what can we find in the New Testament?

1.The fulfillment of God’s promises of the Old Testament and a plan for eternal salvation in heaven of His children.

2.A depiction of the birth, the work, the crucifixion, and the resurrection of the prophesied Messiah of the Old Testament.

3.Details of the plan of salvation for God’s children—belief, repentance, and baptism into the church established by the Holy Spirit in Acts 2.

4.Instructions for how Christians should live to be pleasing to God.
