The Light of the World     John 8:12-20

This post covers Jesus as the light of the world.

‘The Light of the World’ concerns what Jesus said about Himself, John 8:12. “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Jesus provides light to live by.

Darkness, the absence of light, produces nothing of value. On the other hand, light contributes both heat, energy, and illumination—important needs for people. In absolute darkness or complete blindness, we stumble and fall. In daylight or with sight, safe activities can occur.

The gospel of John opens with statements declaring Jesus as the source of life and light, John 1:3-5. “All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

We need the light that Jesus provides.

One of the Psalms helps explain that light, Psalms 119:105. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Thus, the word of God furnishes the light that Jesus sheds into our lives. Then reading and studying the Bible provides the light we need.

Also, a major command that Jesus gave involves belief, John 14:1. “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.” Jesus consistently called for belief in Him as the Son of God.

Likewise, Jesus also gave commands to His disciples, John 13:34-35. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” Christians must love each other.

Just before He ascended back to Heaven, Jesus gave a command to His apostles to build up the kingdom, Matthew 28:19-20. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”

So, what did we learn?

1.Jesus provides light through the scriptures.

2.Jesus desires His disciples to teach everyone and baptize those who believe.
