The Gospel   Romans 1:16-17

This post concerns information about the power of God.

‘The Gospel’ discusses how God uses this good news

as the power to save.

Firstly, the Apostle Paul defines gospel, Romans 1:16-17. “I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it… the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes…”

At this point, some might ask, “Why doesn’t God just whisk the saved into heaven?” But this totally misunderstands the basic nature of God.

In brief, holiness characterizes God. Peter repeated Leviticus 11:44 to show God’s nature, 1 Peter 1:16. “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

On the other hand, men have exhibited unholiness since Adam and Eve sinned.

At that point, God launched His plan to forgive and restore people to a right relationship with Him like in the Garden of Eden and thus live eternally in heaven.

Then, God sent His Son to live, preach, die on the cross, and undergo resurrection to atone for our sins. Four New Testament books—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—attest to the importance of this information. We call these books the good news because that describe what God did.

So, to understand why God established this message as His power, consider the nature of sinful man. Sinners will not populate heaven, Revelation 21:27. “…nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false…”  To redeem man, both removal of sin and forgiveness needs to occur.

For example, reconciliation involves God not counting sins. The Apostle Paul says this reconciliation comes through Jesus, Romans 5:11. “through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation…”

Paul explained, 2 Corinthians 5:18-19. “All this is from God who through Christ reconciled… the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them…”

Our sins were covered by Jesus, 1 Peter 2:24. “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.” Therefore, Jesus became the propitiation of our sins on the cross.
