The Cloud      Exodus 10:34

This post discusses the cloud as God’s glory displayed in the Old Testament.

‘The Cloud’ as a post shows God’s glory as depicted in the tabernacle and the temple.

At God’s direction, His chosen people, the children of Israel, built a beautiful tent of meeting or tabernacle. A cloud, symbolizing God’s presence, came during the erection of the Tabernacle, Exodus 10:34, ““Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.”

Years later when Solomon finished building the temple, a similar cloud appeared, I Kings 8:10-11. “… a cloud filled the house of the LORD, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD.”

In this way, the cloud signified the glory of the Lord. God had expelled Adam and Eve from living with Him in the Garden of Eden. Now, He again dwelt among His people.

Later, the people turned to worshipping idols and refused reformation by prophets who repeatedly admonished them.  At that point, the glory of the Lord left the temple and Jerusalem, Ezekiel 10:18; 11:23. “…Then the glory of the LORD went out from the threshold of the house, and stood over the cherubim…

…And the glory of the LORD went up from the midst of the city and stood on the mountain that is on the east side of the city.”

In this way, God showed that He would not dwell among a sinful nation.

In review, God gloriously dwelt with His creation in the beautiful Garden of Eden, only to see that relationship severed by sin—see Genesis 1-3. Later, He again chose to dwell gloriously with His chosen people in the tabernacle and the temple. However, as earlier in the Garden of Eden, sin severed that beautiful relationship when the children of Israel worshipped idols.

God then turned to preparing a people for the advent of His Son in New Testament days.

So, what did we learn?

1.Exhibitions of God’s glory appear when He dwells with His people.

2.Sin destroys the displayed glory and relationship of God with His people.
